Prayer and Worship Ministries

Sunday Eucharist is the weekly gathering of the church community for worship.  At this service, the scriptures are proclaimed so that God’s people might hear the saving and divine word and gather at the Lord’s table to be nourished and sustained for the task of going forth.

The Eucharistic liturgy is primarily a prayer of thanksgiving to the Creator, to God.  Offered by the children of God, all of us, with, through, and in Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.  This prayer of thanksgiving to God is made in word and gesture, in song and silence, in sign and symbol, in solo voice and in unison voice.  Sunday Eucharist is the church at prayer, meeting the Lord in the assembly of word, sacrament, and family – a communion, sealed in the covenant of the Lord’s blood.

In a nutshell, the liturgy of Sunday Eucharist is the encounter of the church, all of us, with God.  Sunday mass is the meeting of God’s people with God at a common table; it is a meeting of human beings with the Divine.  It is the task, the ministry of the Prayer and Worship Commission to ensure all of the ministries are being carried out and served by trained, qualified parishioners.

MINISTRY OF WELCOME AND HOSPITALITY

St. James Stars

The Art and Environment ministers (artisans, woodworkers, seamstresses, launderers, painters, engineers, electricians, etc.) and Ministers of Hospitality (ushers and greeters) prepare a place of welcome and love where the community gathers for worship; to ready that holy ground, that house of God’s people where Creator and created meet.

THE MINISTRY OF MUSIC

MINISTRY OF GOD’S WORD

Ministers of the Word (Lectors) prepare for and execute the proclamation of the scriptures so that the gathered assembly may hear the Lord’s saving word.

MINISTERS OF GOD’S TABLE

Acolytes (Servers) prepare the table and the table prayer so that we can offer thanks to the Lord who dines with sinners.

Ministers of Eucharist prepare a moment that invites the community to prayer and helps ready believers for communion with the Lord and one another.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process people over the age of seven are welcomed into the Catholic faith.  This process introduces people to the Catholic faith through Catechesis which leads the Catechumens to an appropriate acquaintance of dogma while discovering a sense of the mystery of salvation.  Catechumens are also led through the support of sponsors, godparents, and the entire community to develop lives steeped in prayer, bearing witness to the faith.  The Catechumens will participate in appropriate liturgical rites designed to purify and strengthen them with God’s blessing thus preparing them for their eventual participation in the liturgy of the eucharist.  Since the Church’s life is apostolic, they will also learn how to work actively with others to spread the Gospel and build up the Church by the witness of their lives.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for those who have never been baptized in any Christian faith tradition, those who have been baptized in other Christian traditions who are searching for a new community, and those who were baptized as infants but never had the opportunity to learn about their faith and desire an opportunity to complete their initiation.
