15 OT

Here we are already in the middle of Summer.  How is your garden growing?  Our reading today speaks of seed growing and maturing.  While the rain and sun nourish the plants to grow, much depends on the kind of soil they are planted in.  We gather on the weekend here at church or on TV or on the internet to be nourished by the Lord through His Word and Sacrament.  We are called to be the rich soil for the word of God to take root, bloom, and thrive across the world.

Jesus tells the story, the parable of the sower and the seed.  At first glance the farmer seems to be doing a lousy job of planting.  Why throw the seed on a path or on rocky ground where it has little chance of germinating?  Take time to pull the weeds first so they won’t choke off the plants later.  Wouldn’t it make more sense to sow all the seed in rich soil?  But God does not limit where the seed goes.  Everyone gets a chance to receive His grace and love, no matter what may be in the way.  You might say He’s wildly extravagant and almost wasteful in giving the seed of His Word a chance to bloom in unlikely and unexpected places.  This allows it to bear fruit far beyond expectations.

The question for us is, am I the rich soil or the hardened path, or the shallow ground, or the weed patch?  Let us resolve to be the fertile ground for God’s Word to take root, not allowing it to be choked off by the cares of the world.  Then we will bear fruit 30 or 60 or 100 fold.

Love, Peace, Joy
