15th Sunday in OT - July 16, 2023

Today we hear, “On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.”  Many of us may wish to do the same thing this summer season.  We can imagine the feeling right now, leaving our home and finding a nice refreshing spot where we can relax.  Like the crowds at the seashore, may we take this opportunity today to take a break, to listen to the Lord, and to absorb his message for us.

The story, the parable we hear, is the sower and the seed.  Both Isaiah and Jesus explain that the seed represents God’s word which can be fertile and multiply.  Will the seeds within us bloom and bear fruit?  That depends on whether we nurture them well or not.  Sometimes we let them dry out and die.  Maybe we just don’t pay attention to God’s word and miss our opportunity.  Or we fail to understand it.  Or we decide it doesn’t relate to our own lives.  Or we don’t allow it because it’s too challenging.  Like the seed in the parable, there are many obstacles to God’s seed, his word, to bearing fruit.  Let us pray in the hope that God’s word in us can eventually bear much fruit.

Love, Peace, Joy,

Fr. Bob
