In today’s readings we encounter a number of people whom fortune smiles upon. Solomon, heir to King David’s throne, is visited by God, who promises him whatever he wishes. In the Gospel, a random person discovers buried treasure and a merchant searching for fine pearls find a pearl of great price.
The well-known story of Solomon’s great wisdom is used to determine a baby’s true mother by proposing to cut the baby in two. Note that Solomon did not specifically ask God for wisdom. He asked God simply for an understanding heart. Not asking for an understanding mind, but an understanding heart so that he could know in his heart what is right. God then gives him a heart both wise and understanding that he gains the wisdom to distinguish right from wrong and make just judgments.
Again we are in Matthew’s Gospel of parables of the kingdom. The man finds a treasure in a field and then reburies it seems strange. But hiding a treasure underground was not uncommon. The parable’s point is that the finder gives everything he has to buy the field and there obtains the treasure. So, what must we be willing to do to gain the treasure of the kingdom of God?
As we continue to confirm our lives to the life of Christ, making Christ our everlasting treasure, we will not be disappointed. Using the gift of the Holy Spirit’s wisdom, we will recognize the true treasures of life and seek after the things that really matter.
Love, Peace, Joy
