Dear Parishioners,
When we want something from a friend, whether it’s something they have or a favor they could do for us, we normally just go ahead and ask. Jesus tells his disciples today that we should approach God in the same way. He assures us that we should persist in prayer for we are a needy people, ultimately dependent on God. Our lives are in Gods’ hands and so we pray that God watches over us, forgives us, and has mercy on us, as we proclaim when praying the Lord’s Prayer just as Jesus taught us.
Bread makes two appearances in today’s Gospel, as a part of the Lord’s Prayer and as the request the midnight caller makes of his friend. Last week we heard Abraham offer bread as a sign of hospitality to the strangers traveling past his home. Today Jesus makes use of this cultural tradition when he gives us an example of a person whose cupboard is empty when a friend unexpectedly shows up at his house. His friend is in a dilemma. He must offer hospitality but he has nothing to give. If Jesus goes so far as to say that awakening a friend and disturbing their family is the right thing to do in this case, how free we must be to prevail on God in our need, no matter the circumstances.
Love, Peace, Joy,
Fr. Bob
