28th Sunday in OT - October 15, 2023

Today we hear Jesus tell the story of a king who invites everyone he can find to a feast for his son.  Every Sunday, we are invited to a feast where we receive God’s Son.  Many weekends we take the invitation      for granted or see it only as some sort of obligation.    Let this be an opportunity to be reminded that the Eucharist is a feast, that God’s Son offers himself for us each time, and that this is just a foretaste of the heavenly banquet to come.

The Gospel parable makes clear that our appropriate response to an invitation to a feast is acceptance.  But beyond that, what should be our response to such generosity from God?  We are called to extend that kind of generosity to others.  And generosity to those in need extends God’s generosity to those who most need it.  May we realize the ultimate source of all that we are blessed with, so that we may be like the king’s servants, who could have attended the feast alone, but continue to pass that generosity along to good and bad alike, until it had spread all over the region.

Today at all the Masses this weekend, we are not only experiencing our Lord in his word and in the sacrament of the Eucharist, we are  also experiencing his healing power in the sacrament of the sick.  There’s an old saying, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.”  We all need healing of some sort.  Certainly spiritual, also physical, emotional, and mental healing.  We join our sisters and brothers who will be anointed, in our prayers, our love, and our concern.  As Jesus offered his life to the Father for us, we too can offer any of our crosses and difficulties for one another and to the Lord.  Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help us with the grace of the Holy Spirit.  May the Lord who frees us from sin raise us up to new life and health.  Amen.

Love, Peace, Joy,

Fr. Bob
