5th Sunday of Easter

Today we honor all mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and all women caretakers in our lives.     In our second reading Peter’s words apply to many      of them, for they have been cornerstones in our       lives- chosen and precious.  In the Gospel, Jesus teaches his disciples that he shows the way to his Father.  Many of us were shown the way to faith by our mothers and so we pray for them, living and deceased.

In John 14:6, Jesus said to his disciples “No one comes to the Father except through me.”  For some Christians this line has become a weapon to be used against those who are not Christian, denying them the possibility of salvation.  But when Jesus said these words, He was speaking to his disciples in response to Thomas’s fear that they would not know how to follow him to the Father.  So Jesus tells them that He is the way, the truth, and the life.  All we have to do to find the magic ingredient to get to heaven is read Matthew’s parable (25:31-46) of the Last Judgement-loving unconditionally.  Anyone can choose to do this, whether they are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, whatever religion and maybe even Atheists.  Salvation is open to all whether they know Jesus well or even at all.  For us as Catholics and Christians, we are blessed to have this way to follow.

Some more good news to share is that we will begin celebrating public Mass on Pentecost weekend, May 30th and 31st.  We will have some instructions in the coming weeks as to how we will accomplish this.

And since it is Mother’s Day and May is the month of Mary, we will  be having a “stay in your car” May Crowning at 11:00 AM Sunday, May 10th, in the parking lot.  What a wonderful gift to bring mom to that prayerful celebration.  Mary, our Mother, pray for us.

Love, Peace, Joy

Fr. Bob
