Epiphany

The tree may be taken down, gifts opened, put away, returned or even broken, and decorative lights turned off, but the Church continues to celebrate the word made flesh, the incarnation.  Today we celebrate another great aspect of Christmas.  A light, a star, shines for all to see, revealing God’s glory and drawing people from all over.  In Isaiah the light is in Jerusalem, the holy city, attracting Kings and caravans.  In the Gospel, the light is in the sky over Bethlehem, attracting magi from the east.  Paul preaches that the light shines equally for all, Jews and Gentiles, co-partners in the promise of salvation as our Psalm sings, “every nation on earth will adore you.”

Like the Three Kings, we also have the opportunity to come seek the Lord.  It is a journey we make throughout our lives, looking for the Lord’s presence in the world, in our lives, and in ourselves.  Like the magi, who return home by a different way, encountering the Lord often leads to change of direction in our lives.

Why not, in chalk, write over your doorway of your home 20+C+M+B+20; the initials (names) legendarily given to the magi-Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.  Therefore, coming and going we are always searching for the Lord.

Love, Peace, Joy

Fr. Bob
