The Baptism of the Lord - January 12, 2025

Over the Christmas season, which ends today, the Gospel passages have told how God’s Son was made manifest to the world. The angels told the shepherds that a savior had been born in Bethlehem. The Magi followed the star to give homage to the new born Messiah. In his youth, Jesus amazed the teachers in the Temple. Today we hear that at Jesus’ baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon him like a dove and the Father’s voice could be heard saying, “You are my beloved Son.” We rejoice today, for the Son of God has been revealed to us.

We have been baptized in Christ, and are God’s beloved children, baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. In us, God is well pleased. God continues to shower us with grace, as was poured down on us in a special way in baptism, as we live out our baptismal calling. Significantly, before the Father spoke to him at his baptism, Jesus prayed to God, initiating a dialogue with his Father. May we initiate that dialogue as well, again and again and again, praying that God’s grace pours down on us from the heavens, helping us to grow into the beloved sons and daughters God calls us    to be.

Love, Peace, Joy,

Fr. Bob
