Today we hear Jesus describe the relationship of the Holy Trinity. He tells his disciples that everything the Father has is his and that the Holy Spirit would take from what is his and declare it to them. Everything the Father has, the Son has, and the Holy Spirit will reveal it to us. Our Father in heaven provides a model of selfless generosity to our own father, and male caretakers, whom we honor on this day, as they freely share what they have with their children, family, and friends. Today we praise the Holy Trinity– Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three persons one God, their unique, and united relationship.
God constantly draws us into relationship. A loving relationship is foundational to the unity, so naturally God wishes to live in relationship with us. Jesus lived his life restoring and deepening relationships with others, sharing his deepest concerns with them (telling them he would die and rise again) and caring for their well being (calming the storm, raising Lazarus). The Father and Son sent the Holy Spirit to come down upon us and remain with us forever in a most intimate relationship. In this way, we are enabled to live constantly in a loving relationship with God.
When we recite the creed, we affirm our faith in the Trinity. In a way, it is like wedding vows. When a couple marries, they are saying to their spouse what they believe in them, and that they wish to enter a loving, and lasting relationship with them. It is also the mission statement of St. James Parish, “ To continue Jesus’ work of calling all people into a loving relationship with God and neighbor.”
Love, Peace, Joy,
Fr. Bob
